If you are feeling the strain of lockdown please refer back to previous newsletters from May that have good tips to create balance both mentally and emotionally. There are certain coping mechanisms that you may have dropped into during lockdown that will not be serving you very well in the short or long term.
It might be that you may have been drinking more alcohol whilst we have been in isolation. Maybe you feel that the alcohol calms the stress or anxiety, helps you relax or possibly it was just something to do.
Granted, not everybody is drinking more. An article reported that a poll of 1000 Americans showed 35% are drinking the same amount they used to and 28% are drinking less.
Whether you’re drinking habits have recently changed or not, it’s worth taking a minute to visit the topic. Please remember that alcohol can create negative reactions throughout the body however it has very problematic affects in the gut.
- Alcohol is a major irritant to the lining of the gut.
- Alcohol can disrupt gut motility
- Alcohol can contribute to leaky gut
- Alcohol can affect the absorption of critical nutrients
Beer and wine are more fermentable than other drinks and may cause more problems for people with such problems as SIBO.
Clear spirits are a safer option.
If you do choose to drink alcohol, try to maintain a sensible intake, nothing more than 30ml of clear spirits two or three times per week.
Clear spirits include gin, vodka, tequila, and white rum.
Please also remember that alcohol intake at night will disturb your sleep cycles negatively and interrupt your circadian rhyme.
It blocks REM sleep which is the most restorative type of sleep. With less REM sleep, you’re likely to wake up feeling groggy and unfocused.
It can also aggravate breathing problems.
Alcohol causes your whole body to relax, including the muscles of your throat, and that makes you more prone to snoring and sleep apnoea.
It also leads to extra bathroom trips and a drop in blood sugar during the night, which cause a release of stress hormones which will again affect the restorative recovery phases you cycle through at night.
Sugar is also often used as an emotional support and just like alcohol when increased amounts are consumed on a regular basis it will negatively affect your health.
Sugar causes glucose levels to rise and fall.
Unstable blood sugar can leave you experiencing mood swings, fatigue, and headaches. It also contributes to cravings, which begins the cycle of false hunger.
Your immune function will be affected by sugar.
Studies show that sugar can interfere with the way your body fights disease and suppresses your immune system response. Bacteria and yeast feed on sugar, so excess glucose in the body causes these pathogenic organisms to proliferate.
Sugar increases stress.
The body has the same chemical response when blood sugar is low as it does when stressed. After you eat a sweet snack, stress hormones begin to compensate for the crash by raising your blood sugar.
Sugar intake will affect the uptake of essential nutrients––especially vitamins A, C, B-12, Chromium and Calcium.
Sugar accelerates aging.
After sugar hits your bloodstream, it attaches to proteins. The mix of these proteins with sugar causes the skin to lose elasticity and leads to premature aging.
Sugar increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, and heart disease.
Foods that quickly affect blood sugar contribute to a greater risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.Research also suggests connections between these high-glycaemic diets and various forms of cancer.
Sugar can cause tooth decay and gum disease, which can lead to heart disease.
Sugar causes tooth decay more efficiently than any other food.Increasing evidence shows that chronic infections, like those that result from dental problems, play a role in the development of heart disease. Most researchers believe that the connection stems from the body’s inflammatory response to infection. Fortunately, this works both ways. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle will decrease your risk of common illnesses, which reduces the chance that they’ll become a more serious condition later on.
You may have seen in the press recently about safeguarding British food standards. With trade negotiations in the coming weeks, we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to secure the future for Britain’s farmers. We must ensure that British food standards are safeguarded and that any food imports meet these high standards. If you haven’t already done so,sign the petitionthat urges the government not to import food through future trade deals that would be illegal for our farmers to produce here.
